Overview
SS2 - TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER
6 days / 5 nights -- from US$ 845.-- / EUR 600.--
Located in a large tract of uninhabited, unspoilt forest close to the world’s largest macaw clay lick, the Tambopata Research Centre is home to stable populations of endangered wildlife and is permanently staffed by researchers and expert naturalist guides. Simple yet comfortable, the lodge has just 13 bedrooms, and caters to small groups - meaning that as we explore the forest we will be less intrusive and have a better chance of spotting wildlife.
ITINERARY
DAY 1:PUERTO MALDONADO - POSADA AMAZONAS
Reception at Pto. Maldonado airport and transfer to the river port from where we continue by boat to the Posada Amazonas. During our trip we may see bird species typical of the river or forest edge. Arriving at Posada Amazonas we receive a short orientation and a complete briefing of the lodge and the Eseja Ecotourism Project. If time allows us we embark on an afternoon activity, such as a visit to a local farm. A video about Tambopata will be shown after dinner. (L/D)
DAY 2:POSADA AMAZONAS – TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER
We will be up at dawn for a visit to the Tres Chimbadas oxbow lake taking a long, easy canoe ride around it, looking for giant river otters, turtles, hoatzins and wading birds. Right after that we travel up the Tambopata River for 3 hours. Wildlife quickly becomes more abundant. We will see macaws, herons, kingfishers and cormorants frequently and may spot capybaras, caimans, storks, ducks and other wildlife. On arrival at the T.R.C. we hold an orientation session. After this we hike the Bamboo Trail, great for birdwatching and home of the frequently found howler and dusky titi monkeys. We return to T.R.C. for dinner and can do a frog walk through the forest afterwards. (B/L/D)
DAY 3:TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER
At dawn we cross the river to the world’s largest Macaw Clay Lick, where hundreds of parrots and macaws from up to 15 species congregate daily. After breakfast at the lodge we hike the Ocelot Trail, which exemplifies the quintessential rainforest. We return to T.R.C. for lunch and then embark on a 2 mile hike to the palm swamp, a nesting colony and preferred roost for blue and gold macaws. We hike back to the lodge for dinner. (B/L/D)
DAY 4:TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER
After repeating our Macaw Clay Lick experience, we visit a small, dying oxbow lake. We will see the differences between the seven distinct habitats around T.R.C. by walking the trails at leisure. Optional night walk. (B/L/D)
DAY 5:TAMBOPATA RESEARCH CENTER – POSADA AMAZONAS
We will wake up at dawn once again to visit the Macaw Clay Lick and then return for breakfast, after which we embark back to Posada Amazonas, arriving mid-afternoon. (B/L/D)
DAY 6:POSADA AMAZONAS - PUERTO MALDONADO
After an early breakfast we return to Puerto Maldonado for our flight back to Cusco or Lima. (B)
